The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is suing Huntington to recover $270 million in property taxes paid since 2010.

June 14, 2013

Dear Colleagues,

The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is suing Huntington to recover $270 million in property taxes paid since 2010.

If successful, the lawsuit is projected to result in:

  • 15% increase in Town property taxes
  • 60% increase in Northport–East Northport school taxes.

The Town and the School District are fighting in court, but the legal challenges could take years to resolve. The battle is costly and the results uncertain. There is another option. The Governor and the State Legislature are considering restructuring LIPA.

What You Can Do…

We need to get the message to Governor Cuomo and the State Legislature that legislation must include language to resolve the existing Tax Certiorari actions against Huntington.

Please get the message out by doing one or more of the following:

1) Sign the On-line Petition: http://www.huntingtonny.gov/content/13753/23144/default.aspx

Anyone may sign the petition, even those not residing within the Town of Huntington.

2) Email a copy of the Constituent Call to Action Letter to:

  • Governor Andrew M. Cuomo at gov.cuomo@chamber.state.ny.us
  • Senator Carl L. Marcellino at marcelli@senate.state.ny.us
  • Senator John J. Flanagan at flanagan@nysenate.gov
  • Assemblyman Andrew P. Raia at raiaa@assembly.state.ny.us
  • Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci at lupinaccic@assembly.state.ny.us

3) Call the Governor’s Hotline at (855) 693-8690 and tell Governor Cuomo that the Town of Huntington has kept its commitment to freeze the assessment on the Northport Power Station and now LIPA/National Grid must also live up to its pledge and continue to pay its taxes. Tell the Governor, this issue must be resolved, now and going forward, in any legislation to restructure LIPA.

The Town of Huntington Press Release: Public_Action_Sought_to_Stop_LIPA_Tax_Hike

I have signed the petition, sent the emails and made the call and ask that you join me in doing the same!  The loss of LIPA tax dollars will be detrimental to us all!

Thank you for your cooperation and prompt attention to this matter.

In unity,

Antoinette
